Vasily Sarana received a maximum of awards at the 10th Baikal International Film Festival of documentary, popular science and educational films “People and Environment”. His film “Journey to the source of Lena” was shot in Baikalo-Lensky Nature Reserve in 2010. The film was inspired by his visit to Baikal International Film Festival “People and Environment”. “Journey to the source of Lena” describes the Lena’s riverhead and is the first of the cycle of films about Siberian nature. This film portrayed the Russian nature, and it brought Vasily Sarana five awards from non-governmental and environmental organisations, including one from “Greenpeace”.
Three Festival’s awards presented by non-governmental and environmental organisations went to the Belorussian film maker Sergei Makhov as recognition for his film “Every Bird Should Have Its Own Nest”. The film tells us a story of the leading Belorussian ornithologist Vladimir Ivonovsky who makes research of “red listed” birds of prey in the marshes. Over the years of his research, he has described some unique techniques of building nestles.
The 10th Baikal International Film Festival of documentary, popular-science and educational films “People and Environment” was held on 7-11th October 2011. 110 documentaries from 29 countries worldwide were submitted. 15 documentary films, by directors from USA, Australia, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Serbia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia, made it onto the competition programme. This festival of “Pure cinema”, on the banks of the cleanest lake on the planet, seeks to bring public attention to the problems of environmental pollution, and in particular of Lake Baikal.
